Six Sentence Stories: Project

This is a post to the blog hop Six Sentence Stories: Project.

But I Don't Have a Hobby!

For most it was an easy assignment. . .bring something to display to the grammar school hobby show.  This turned into a difficult assignment and project since I didn't have any hobbies at age nine, and most of my spare time was taken up with doing farm chores.  Thanks to my mother coming to my rescue by buying some liquid embroidery pens and a doily printed with an easy design to embroider, and also buying an oil paint-by-number set of parrot pictures, I was able to discover if these might turn into my hobbies.  I completed the things she bought and displayed them alongside the hobbies shown by my classmates.

Some of the typical hobbies for kids during that time period were the following:  lots of collections (comic books, storybook dolls, paper dolls, marbles, stamps, agates, rocks, shells, model cars, model airplanes, baseball cards, coins, picture postcards, and matchbook covers), and displays of items that had been whittled, knitted, crocheted, embroidered, sewed or made built out of wood.

As for my projects becoming an ongoing hobby. . .I decided to develop some sewing skills the next year and that would turn out to be kind of a necessary hobby in my life.

A simple dress I sewed for a granddaughter a few years ago.

  1. interesting concept, if the meaning I infer is the one that you mean to imply, a hobby that has a value that is not easily surrendered (not necessarily a utilitarian or practical value). In fact, it's more likely to be a subjective value such as satisfaction of fulfillment.
(these Six Sentence posts are fun, non?)

    oh yeah!! Frist?

    1. Yes, you are right. I have felt much more fulfillment in sewing, but then I've had a lot more practice in that. I have had a desire to take up painting sometime, but have more of an interest in watercolors. That first attempt at finding a hobby, was really one of necessity, in that if I wanted to get a good grade, I needed to participate. Sewing has often fulfilled a need too--- a child needed a new item of clothing that was more suitable than what might be found in the stores, or it was for a gift, or a costume, etc. If a hobby must be done in one's leisure time, then sewing probably doesn't fill the bill. Leisure time really didn't exist much when caring for a growing family.

    1. Thank you. Making the dress was very fun.

Everyone has their own individual talents. You no doubt do many things that would be very challenging for me.

  3. How I used to dread class assignments such as this, and when my children were in school too. i wasn't much of a collector and still am not, but i have done plenty of sewing, cross-stitch, knitting and crochet over the years. Arthritis limits that some now, but I would like to try quilt making. Have you ever sewn one? Your dress is done so nicely!
