100 WCGU - Week #173 ...as the flames leapt skyward

Thank you Julia for recognizing me as the author of the week on the 100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups.  This week I am linking up my post for 100 WCGU - Week #173. . .as the flames leapt skyward.  Just so you remember, you must be over 16 to write a post for this blog hop. The post is to be written as a story in exactly 100 words using the prompt given.

That summer the new owners cleared their property of the overgrown Scotch broom.  The branches and roots were piled high.  In the fall during the cooler moist weather the pile could be burned when the fire department gave the okay. The family bought hotdogs, buns, and s'mores' ingredients in preparation for the burning day.  Image their great surprise when instead of a slow burning fire, the Scotch broom quickly exploded as the flames leapt skyward. This fire produced ashes, instead of slow burning coals for roasting their hotdogs and marshmallows.  The dry plants' volatile oil and wax were the culprits!

  1. Well, the intention was good! Nothing like a good Scotch broom removal party! :-)

    1. I suspect only someone who has had to deal with Scotch broom understands the great significance of such a party. :-)

  2. It has been so long since I have smelled the burning of brush and leaves in the Fall. I supposed the'll have to try a new way to roast the marshmallows and cook the hot dogs. Congratulations on being selected author of the week.

    1. When Scotch broom is in bloom, it has quite a strong smell. I used to be allergic to the smell. I haven't had that problem so much in recent years.
