Cee's Compose Yourself Challenge: Week #9 Rule of Thirds Introduction

When I first started taking photos, I thought it was best to center the subject.  As I have come to learn more about the rule of thirds I've tried to apply this principle more frequently.  Sometimes the photos may need some help from the editing tools on my computer.  Here are some photos I'm posting on my blog and linking to Cee's Compose Yourself Challenge:  Week #9 Rule of Thirds Introduction.  She is a marvelous and very encouraging instructor.  Be sure to check out her site.

The right one third of the photo shows the flowers and the other two thirds is mostly ground cover.
The statue of the girl uses one third of the left part of the photo with  the remaining two thirds being the landscape.
There are two different ways to view this photo.  The barn and the barn's reflection can be seen as using the left-hand column with the other two thirds being the landscape and the rest of the reflection.  Another way to view this would be to see three horizontal thirds, with the reflection being the lower third, the grass in the middle as being the middle third, and the barn and foliage as being the upper third.
This little girl is in the right hand column and appears to be going into the photo rather than out of it.
The waterfall predominately is using the upper two thirds in the left column, or the entire column if one counts the slight reflection.  The foliage and the rest of the water can be seen as the other two thirds of the photo.  Another way to see this, would be to view the water horizontally taking up a a little more than a third of the photo and the waterfall and landscape taking up almost two thirds of the photo.
This lighthouse is using mostly the upper two thirds of the right hand column and the ground is using mostly the lower  horizontal third.
The reeds are using the entire lower horizontal third.  The turtles and rock are using the middle horizontal third, and the rest of the water is the upper horizontal third.

Cee has featured this post on her Compose Yourself Challenge:  Week #9 Rule of Thirds Introduction.  I hope all who come to take a look enjoy the photographs.

  1. You captured Yaquina Head....my favorite lighthouse. Your photos are marvelous. I love the red barn and reflection the best. And yes you have captured a very complex rule of thirds in that photo. It is a simple concept but can get quite complex all at the same time.
